Medan, North Sumatra has been affected by flood as of January 6, 2011. Thousands of people are seeking refuge from the worst flood in the last eight years.
Spokesperson of the National Disaster Management Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said today that heavy
precipitation is one of the main factors causing the disaster."Extreme rainfalls are likely to take place until March 2011," Sutopo told VIVAnews. The high raindrops showering the area then led to the overflow of nine rivers in Medan.
Sutopo also blamed environmental damage for the annual tragedy. "There are two factors that always trigger flood: natural and environmental elements. Human being is also held responsible for the trouble," he said.
"Four people are reportedly killed during the disaster. But we're still looking through it," said Sutopo.
